How to wear summer dresses in winter effortlessly

Walking in London in elegant all black look

Do you have a wardrobe full of summer dresses that you are dying to wear yet these cold winter days just don’t seem to go away? In this post, I am sharing my guide on how to wear summer dresses in winter whilst looking effortlessly stylish.

I’ve collected a lot of summer dresses over the years and there’s just never enough warm summer days in London to wear them all! So I decided that summer dresses don’t have to be worn in winter. This is how I am styling a black summer dress for winter days without looking out of season.

Effortlessly styling summer dress for winter days

The first step in how to wear summer dresses in winter is to choose the right summer dress

What I mean about that is to think about the colour palette. I try to stick to darker, wintery colours as opposed to bright colourful dresses. I wore this black sleeveless dress with a flowy skirt where the black is slightly longer than the front. The dress is embroidered with some gorgeous patterns and hand-sewn sequins. Unfortunately, I got this from a local boutique on one of our travels to Malta, but I have linked something similar herehere, here and cheaper options here and here (currently on sale).

The second step is to layer with a nice cashmere jumper

Last month, purchased this super cosy cashmere jumper from Tory Burch which I have layered over this dress. Not sure if you can see it in this photo, but I particularly love the sequinned elbow patches! They are so cute and can effortlessly convert into an evening outfit – from work to dinner. It goes with everything! I’ve also paired it with dressy trousers, skirts, jeans, etc. I have to stop myself from reaching for it every time I get dressed to go out! It’s so versatile and keeps me really warm! They also come in pink, camel and yellow. I am tempted to add another pink or camel one to my collection!

Winter up the outfit with over-the-knee boots

London is a city where you mostly walk and catch public transport, even in winter – rain, hail or shine. So I literally live in boots to keep my legs and feet warm. I’ve had these over-the-knee Stuart Weitzman for years and still serve me very well. They are truly investment pieces and never go out of style. Tip: layer with tights for extra warmth.

Jazz up an all-black outfit with accessories, and cinch in the waist

My summer dresses for winter days look is not complete with some luxury accessories. I always advise people to add accessories to jazz up an all-black outfit, and also add some interest to the look. I particularly love to cinch in the waist with a thin leather belt as that is so chic and elegant. The gold buckle in my Ferragamo belt goes perfectly with the embroidery and the champagne sequins on the dress. The belt comes with a pink loop, so I thought my mini Miss Sicily elegantly completed this look.

I wore this to a Chinese New Year lunch with some friends, so I styled it with barely there makeup and a nude lip. But you can really glam up this look for an evening dinner or date night with classic red lipstick.
